I love London. It’s just one of those places that I find endlessly fascinating. I used to live and work there, and I loved it. Now, due to life getting in the way, I live hundreds of miles to the north, but I try to visit for a weekend, whenever I have some free time. If you’ve never been to London, I highly recommend a visit. The sights and sounds of London are unforgettable, and a weekend is nowhere near long enough to see everything that’s worth seeing. You’ll just have to come back again and again. Read on for some recommendations on worthwhile places to visit, if you intend spending a few days in London.
Accommodation is something you have to sort out, preferably before you arrive. Personally, while I like to visit new or less familiar parts of the city, I do tend to book the same hotel online. Waterloo Travelodge Hotel is a good, moderately priced hotel, and, having stayed there on numerous occasions, I feel at home. Apart from that, Waterloo is a convenient location from which to explore any parts of London that take my fancy on any particular weekend.
Everyone has his, or her, own personal interests, and, fortunately, London is so rich in variety that most, if not all, tastes can be catered to. There’s entertainment, shopping, culture, history, architecture, atmosphere, and just about every other avenue of interest you can think of.
London’s West End is one of the world’s great centres of entertainment. West End shows are world famous and world class, and if you can take in a show during a visit, you’ll be entertained beyond your greatest expectations. The West End is also home to Soho, famous for its adult entertainment venues. Soho, it has to be said, is no longer considered the centre of sleaze and ‘ill repute’ of former years. Whether that’s a plus or a minus, you still need to be careful of con artists looking to fleece unwary visitors.
If you’re more of a daytime person, there are famous sightseeing landmarks, such as Big Ben, The Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral, and the Tower of London, to name a few. If you’re in need of some retail therapy, the many shops of Oxford Street, will welcome you with open arms.
